And, I can hear some of you thinking “people in my industry don't have websites, they're useless”, which is simply wrong. Everyone is using their phone, using Google, to find products and services, so even if your competition doesn't have a website, you should.

If your website shows up first, looks the nicest, and overpowers every other gift shop, you will get about 80% of those customers, that's 280 customers.

           And then, you might start wondering: why are my competitors getting all the business, my shop is so much better! It's simple: nobody is going to realise how good your product or service is, without somewhere to look.

If you have a good system in place for getting reviews, you will experience a snowball effect, where you are getting so much positivity, that clients just carry on coming – it's like paying for advertising, but without the paying part.

           Of course, to have a successful, and prominent Google Maps listing, you will need a powerful website – these two highly effect each other's performance.

To get to the stage where you can comfortably say “I’m a reliable web designer with high-end services”, you will need time to learn, grow and build up knowledge. There are many ways to go about getting there, here are some of them:

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           Learning for free through research and trial and error

           A lot of us either don’t want to spend money on training programs, or don’t want to spend years (and thousands of pounds, in some countries) studying in higher education. I fully understand this, and I don’t think university or training courses are necessary to start your own agency. We have seen it time and time again, individuals have thrown themselves into the industry, gone through a hard time to start, and ended up thriving from everything they have learnt and the mentality they have built. Which is why I would encourage anyone with time, curiosity, and confidence to try this method first.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           Private training
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           For me, this is the fastest way to achieve your goal. It’s not the most affordable, but the return on investment is huge (if you choose the right course). This is the path I picked, personally. I followed an informative and thorough course which taught me everything I needed, not only to be a web designer, but also to be a great marketer. As mentioned, if time is an issue, which it was in my case, a training program is great. I started my agency within one month of completing the training, and was already confident in my ability to deliver results for potential clients.
          &#xD;

  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           University courses
          &#xD;

           If you have time and money, education might be a good idea. Some of us grew up in households and schools where education was highly praised. There is most certainly an argument in favour of universities, but there are many downsides. Some of us might want to have fun while we learn, going out on weekends, seeing friends daily, and graduating at the end of it. My mindset if very different, I prioritise productivity and outright success, which is why I’m not the firmest believer when it comes to this strategy. It’s worth mentioning that you will acquire many social, theoretical, and educational skills by following this journey, but it’s nothing you won’t naturally develop anyway, as an entrepreneur.

           As a web designer, your essentials will be: a website building platform, somewhere to host the websites, somewhere to do the research, and maybe a graphic design platform.

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           For the build-outs, you can go classic, and do your own coding, although I wouldn’t recommend it if you plan to make money fast. You can use Word Press, like many do, although security and customer service issues are recurring in 2022-23. Alternatively, there are other building platforms that are less mainstream, but outperform companies such as WordPress or Squarespace. One of them is called Snapps, it’s my personal favourite for a few reasons:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           1.	It’s built on Google Lighthouse, so SEO is much more achievable
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           1.	It is easy to use and can be very forgiving for beginners who may lack knowledge
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           1.	Every tool you could need to optimise your site is on Snapps
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           1.	It is the much more secure than a platform such as WordPress or Wix (this explains the extra cost of Snapps)

  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           How do I get clients?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h2&gt;&#xD;

           This is where the skills from your training come into play. No matter where you learnt how to do it, prospecting is probably the single most important factor in making your web design agency successful. It will take years to build up a great reputation and out-rank every other web designer in your area, so in the meantime you must go hunting for new clients. This is the only thing that will keep you going, and the only thing that will get you on the right path. When starting your business in this industry, prospecting should take up at least 50% of your time, although more experienced gurus tend to recommend as much as 70%. What we are trying to say is: prospecting must be a priority. Get a client, or two, or three, and then work out how you are going to help them achieve their ambitions. Don't spend too much time hesitating and asking yourself if you are good enough, just prospect and deliver.
          &#xD;

           At first, you must remember that you're a startup, you're not going to be matching prices of individuals with 10+ years experience and a powerful name for themselves. When I started off, I sold fully optimised websites for just £500, I would target people that I already knew, making it easier to build trust at the time of the sale.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;

            Be very careful though, you are only a startup for a certain amount of months, maybe even a year. Once that time has ended, you have to up your prices. That initial price, whatever it was for you, should probably be doubled, start selling websites for thousands, adding extra services such as

           Furthermore, pricing should really vary depending on the client's goals and objectives. If you have a client who wants a 3-page local website with no optimisation and no added value, you should charge a lot less then a more ambitious job. For example, a regional project with a 20-page website, seo, google my business profile, social media management, reputation management, weekly updates, etc.

           There are lots of tools that can help you find what people are searching for, I really like semrush and keyword tool, but they are not free sadly, so this might not be something you want to invest in. Another simple way is to ask all of your friends, family, colleagues, what they would search for certain topics.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           E.g. "Hey Chris, what would you search online if you were looking to loose weight?"

           This is slightly more technical, so I will try to keep it simple. You may already know that backlinks are like votes, the more you have the better, but each vote is not created equally. You could get a vote which is worth nothing, and is almost not worth having, but you could get one vote which is worth tens and tens of average ones. Essentially, you want the most powerful, influential and trustworthy backlinks you can get, this is what will make a big difference for your ranking. When I say "relevant" in the same phrase as backlink, I mean you should do your best to get backlinks from sites that are from the same niche as you.

            Have you every heard of citations? If you have, this information will make a lot of sense to you, if you haven't then you've been missing out big time! You get a citation when your

           business name, phone number and address
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            is found somewhere else than your Google My Business Profile (the google maps part of google you find when you search for a service). For example, if I put your details on my website, along with a review for example, that would count as a citation, which will not only help your website rank, but it will make your Google My Business skyrocket like you have never seen.

           If you were to do this yourself, it could take a while. However, my recommendation would be to find a list of the best citations for your country.

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           E.g. In the UK, I would look up "Top citations UK" and choose one of the first few websites. They usually give you a long list of great citations that are mostly free. All that is left at this point is power through the list until you have finished it. Unlike backlinks, you want as many citations as you can get, from anywhere, it really is a numbers game.
